Numbers 15:32 While the Israelites were in the wilderness, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. 33 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly.

The man gathering wood on the Sabbath day was put to death.

On the contrary, priests did work on the Sabbath day by sacrificing animals to God. They were not put to death. This is the prominent difference between people and priests in keeping the Sabbath day.

Numbers 28:9 On the Sabbath day, make an offering of two lambs.
Leviticus 24:5~8 Take fine flour and bake loaves of bread.....Set them in two rows.

There were two different ways they celebrated the Sabbath of Moses. Ordinary people were not allowed to do any work on the Sabbath day while priests must work to worship God on the Sabbath.
