The Last Supper (English: The Last Supper, Latin: Novissima Coena, French: La Cène) painting is related to the Biblical Feast of Passover. It is based on the last supper Jesus had with his twelve disciples in a place presumed to be the attic of Mark on the evening of Passover, the day before he was sacrificed on the cross. Among the artworks with the theme or title of the Last Supper, the mural by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci is the most famous.
Passover Preparation and the Last Supper Food
The scene of Jesus sharing the Last Supper with his disciples is recorded in all four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John (Matthew 26:20-29, Mark 14:17-25, Luke 22:14-38, John 13:3-17:26). The words taught at the supper that day were a testament (Hebrews 9:16-17).
According to Jesus’ new covenant, eating and drinking the bread and wine during the Passover is equivalent to eating and drinking Jesus’ flesh and blood. Jesus had previously taught that only by eating and drinking his flesh and blood can one obtain eternal life (John 6:53-55). Jesus himself showed us how to practice this teaching in his final words.
Jesus set an example for the new Passover ritual and made the will effective by shedding His blood and sacrificing Himself on the cross the next day (Hebrews 9:16-17). In this sense, the apostles kept the Passover of the new covenant, which was set as an example by sharing the Last Supper with Jesus, the reality of the Passover lamb, before he was sacrificed on the cross.
However, the Eucharistic ritual that was to be performed during Passover began to change in the 2nd century after the apostles left this world. The dispute between the Asian and Roman churches was settled in 325 AD by the Council of Nicaea, where the Roman Emperor Constantine I and Catholic bishops met.
However, the Council of Nicaea adopted the Roman Church’s claim that deviated from the teachings of the Bible. The Passover date set by God is the 14th day of the first month of the sacred calendar (around March or April in the Gregorian calendar), and the Eucharist was to be held on “the Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox.”
It is ironic that Passover, the momentous day of the Bible depicted in the world's most famous religious painting, "The Last Supper," has disappeared from church history.
