When asked to draw a church, we often draw a cross at the top of the building.
Also, most people who go to church carry a cross with them.
That's why for atheists, and for Christians, the cross often symbolizes the church.
Then again, is the cross really a symbol of the church?
If that's true, when did churches start erecting crosses?
To cut to the chase, the cross is not a symbol of the church. That should never happen.
According to the Bible, the cross is nothing more than an idol that God told us not to make.
Ex 20:4-5 “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them.”
The Ten Commandments are one of the commandments of God that Christians know and follow.
God commanded us not to make an idol in the form of anything.
Can the cross be an exception from the words, "in the form of anything"?
No.
Nowhere in the Bible does it say that the cross is an exception.
Therefore, the very act of making a cross is a violation of God's Word.
Lev 26:1 “Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the LORD your God.”
Here, an image, a sacred stone and a carved stone are all idols.
When a man worships an image made of wood or stone, it is idolatry.
What about crosses? Crosses are also made of wood, stone, metal, etc.
Therefore, the cross is nothing more than an idol that God told us not to make.
People use the cross for comfort, to defeat demons, or to find peace.
But the cross has no power or strength, it's just a made of matter.
Wouldn't that rather incur the wrath of God?
Dt 27:15 “Cursed is the man who carves an image or casts an idol-a thing detestable to the LORD, the work of the craftsman’s hands-and sets it up in secret.”
Can those who are cursed by God be saved?
We should never make an idol like a cross made by human hands.
In the Old Testament, the Israelites were God's chosen people.
They claimed to believe in God, but they worshiped idols made of wood or stone as gods and were destroyed, and we should learn from that history.
Isn't that history repeating itself today?
The act of worshipping the cross is merely repeating the foolish behavior of the Israelites in the past.
Any church that erects such a cross is an unsaved, God-cursed church.
So when did crosses come into the church?
The cross was once the Roman method of execution in the past.
Jesus died on the cross.
Do you think the cross looked good to Jesus' disciples, his believers and followers at the time?
I'm pretty sure it wasn't.
Imagine that your family member was hit by a car and killed.
Will the bereaved family have a positive reaction when they see the "car"?
No, it's resentful and unpleasant to look at.
“The public use of the cross was adopted by the Christians as a symbol at the time of Constantine. For the early Christians, surrounded by crucifixion as a grim fact of common experience, there was no danger of beautifying the cross by sentiment.” (Baker’s Dictionary of Theology, p. 152)
As such, crosses were not made or erected in the early church.
Rather, they were negative.
It was an idol that entered the church when Christianity was officially recognized by Constantine in 313.
Still, is it okay to use the cross as a symbol of the church?
No, it doesn't.
As we saw at the beginning, the cross is an idol that God told us not to make, and it will be cursed by God.
The Bible is clear that we cannot be saved if we adding to or subtracting from the teachings of the Bible in our process of believing in God (Revelation 22:18-19).
Therefore, we must remember surely that the cross is an idol, and let those who do not know it know.

Amen! Most people have thought it natural that there are crosses in/out of churches. The related churches or people make an excuse that the cross takes a role to remind us of Jesus’ sacrifice. Furthermore, they insist that the cross is not an idol but just a symbol of churches, which helps people commemorate Jesus’ sacrifice and love. With regard to the matter of making crosses, we must fully understand God’s will through the Second Commandment “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.” According to this, we can clearly understand that the cross is nothing but an idol. With regard to this, there is no excuse.
When we focus on what Jesus taught us 2,000 years ago, we can realize the way to go back to the kingdom of heaven! The Bible tells us that we cannot add anything to the Bible nor take words away from the Bible!
We must not make an idol like a cross, rather we have to remember great sacrifice of Jesus shown on the cross. Cross reverence has been foretold in the old testament through work of Moses. In other words, God knew what people would do and warned people already. We can understand what is happening now by studying the old testament. Because the old testament is copy and shadow, and new testament is reality of the old testament. What shall we do then? We must follow only teachings of God written in the Bible so that we can be blessed by God! We can study many words of God in the WMSCOG!
Right. God clearly told us not to make an image in the form of anything. If you want to receive blessings from God, you must not bow down in front of any idol or make an image. However, many Christians seem to overlook cross reverence because they think the cross is just a symbol of the church. We must not ignore even a single one of God's teachings. Let's not serve the cross and remember that the cross reverence is idolatry.
Amen! If we remembered God's grace for our salvation, we should follow the will of God with obedience. How did God teach about the Cross? above all, In the Ten Commandments, God taught us about idolatry as the 2nd commandment. the Cross is just idolatry as pagan custom. As good example for us, the Apostles who followed Jesus Christ, never served the Cross. In addition, the Saints of the early Church also never served it. we, all who believe in God the Savior, should reject the Cross.
The cross is not a symbol of the church, it is just an idol. We must not build a cross, an idol that God has told us not to serve. God never asked me to worship the cross. Let us obey God's word and return to heaven.
The cross is not a symbol of the church, but an idol.
Never worship the cross.
The Bible recorded Jesus' teachings we should follow but it didn't have cross reverence. Nowadays we can not find the true church like the early church except WMSCOG
The cross is just one of an idol. We have to worship only God not the cross.
Most churches insist that the cross is a symbol of the church, not an idol.
However, according to God's teaching, the cross is merely an idol.
Making a cross and erecting it breaks God's commandment, regardless of worshiping it or relying on it.
The cross reverence is nowhere to be found in the Bible. The cross was the most horrifying execution tool in the time of Jesus.
